Business community and residents coming to terms with open border- Gelephu

The new normal is taking a toll on the people living along the southern borders. More than a month after the country reopened its international borders, residents and business community alike are still coming to terms with it. The business community in Gelephu is losing its customers to the bordering town of Datgari despite the alleged long process imposed on the people while crossing the border.

Deki Lhazom hopes to make her debut next month

Deki Lhazom, the first Bhutanese female footballer to sign for a foreign club, could be making her debut with her new team soon. Talking to BBS, she says she will be joining her new Al-Ittihad teammates in training tomorrow and hopes to get selected for the club’s third league match which will be played in the second week of November. The 18-year-old forward signed a one-season contract with Al-Ittihad Saudi Arabian Club.

Dechencholing HSS and Royal Bodyguards reach finals of RICB U-18 Men’s Baseball League

The first-ever RICB Under-18 Men’s Bhutan Amateur Baseball League has started the playoffs. In the first round played today, Royal Bodyguards defeated Thimphu Baseball Club by 16 to 14 points. In the second round, Dechencholing Higher Secondary School took on Taba Lower Secondary School to triumph by a single point. 

People want LAP for town development of Telung to resume soon- Pema Gatshel

The preparation of Local Area Plan or LAP for a town development in Telung in Dechhenling Gewog in Pema Gatshel has been put on hold due to the coronavirus pandemic. However, now with restrictions all lifted, people want it to resume at the earliest. If not, the rural-urban migration may escalate. Currently, the village has only 50 families.

For the past two years, Diwali or any other celebration in the country has been scaled back due to the coronavirus pandemic. However this year, with restrictions lifted, people whole-heartedly celebrated the festival of lights with great energy, enthusiasm and enjoyment. It was indeed an apt occasion for families to get together and make up for the lost time to COVID.

Significance of Diwali- the festival of lights

Diwali or the festival of lights is being celebrated especially by the Hindu community in the country. The festive season usually falls between October and November on the Hindu Lunar Calendar. This time, the Diwali festival in Bhutan was marked from Sunday until Thursday. Behind the glitzy and colourful festival, there lies a strong spiritual significance.

Farmers in Sephu request for auction yard in their district- W/Phodrang

Farmers in Sephu Gewog in Wangdue Phodrang are requesting the government to set up an auction yard in their district or Thimphu. They say transporting and marketing the products to the auction yard in Phuentsholing is inconvenient and expensive.

Manufacturing manure for commercial purpose

In what may come as an enterprising venture, farmers of Dewathang Gewog in Samdrup Jongkhar started selling manure to supplement their income. Although it is not usual for farmers to rear cattle for manure besides dairy products, collecting cow dung to manufacture manure for commercial purposes is not a widespread practice.

Pay Commission says supposedly leaked clean wage document not legitimate

Just days after the institution of the fifth Pay Commission, a document about the clean wage system has been circulating on social media. The document is a proposal for the clean wage system supposedly by the Finance Ministry and is dated April 2022. BBS tried to check the authenticity of the document with the Finance ministry but the ministry refused to verify the document.

Zhabdrung Tongku or a thousand Zhabdrung statues installed in Wangdue Phodrang Dzong

After waiting for more than a year, the Wangdue Phodrang Dzong finally received the one thousand statues of Zhabdrung Ngawang Namgyel today. The relics were installed following a consecration ceremony presided over by the Tsugla Lopen of the Zhung Dratshang. Ranging the height from fifteen inches to five and a half feet, the thousand statues of Zhabdrung Ngawang Namgyel have been made of gold, silver and copper.
