High Court orders STCBL to compensate its former CEO for unlawful termination

The High Court ordered the State Trading Corporation of Bhutan Limited (STCBL) to compensate its former chief executive officer, Kuenga Namgay, for wrongful termination. The court passed the judgment on Friday. Kuenga Namgay filed a case against the STCBL's board of directors for compelling him to resign in May 2020 in relation to alleged sexual harassment.

Empowering rural communities against corruption

The Bhutan Transparency Initiative’s (BTI) social accountability exercises are helping empower rural communities to combat corruption at the grassroots level. They allow trained community representatives to assess the quality of developmental projects and services rendered by public servants and elected officials. The civil society organisation is currently in Bumthang, engaging communities in evaluating their service providers. 

Bhutan’s press freedom ranking improves but local journalists skeptical

Bhutan has ranked 33 in the global press freedom rankings this year, a jump from last year’s position. The report is published by Reporters Without Borders, a Paris-based international campaign group, which has been monitoring the level of freedom available to the media in 180 countries and territories for the past two decades. Meanwhile, journalists in the country say the step up could be due to more of what has happened elsewhere instead of the progress in the country. The report was published on Tuesday.

People of Shompangkha Gewog delighted to get paved road

The people of four chiwogs under Shompangkha Gewog in the Sarpang district have been using the rough road for more than 14 years. Although the gewog administration blacktopped only four kilometres of the total 17-kilometre farm road, people are delighted.

Police investigating security lapse at the Supreme Court

An ACC official was left injured after the former Trongsa Dzongda, Lhab Dorji, stabbed him with a knife outside the courtroom. With the increasing population and economic growth at Marlung village in Thedtsho Gewog under Wangdue Phodrang, the residents are facing an acute water shortage. The existing source is drying up. And despite trying, the worried residents have failed to secure a resilient drinking water supply. They now say the government needs to invest in finding other sources to resolve the issue.

Tingtibi town continues to grapple with water shortage

More than two months of waiting, the residents of Tingtibi town in Zhemgang continue to grapple with erratic water supply. The people have been fetching water from the nearby stream. And with the onset of the rainy season, people live in constant fear of being affected by water-borne diseases.
