Man dies after falling from a building

A cook of Damphu Central School in Tsirang succumbed to injuries after he fell down from the 18-foot school's academic block. The tragedy took place at about 11:30 AM today.

A family loses everything in a housefire

A family in Gyalza-Lungo chiwog in Laya of Gasa lost their home to a fire accident at about 2 am today. Sources said there were five family members living in the two-storeyed traditional house when the fire broke out but they escaped unhurt. However, they lost all their belongings to the fire.

Egg shortage across the country

There is a shortage of eggs in markets across the country. Poultry farmers say egg production has gone down like never before. And the cause, according to the farmers, is due to the suspected contaminated bird feeds that were in the market a few months ago. Thousands of birds started dying in November and thousands more fell sick after they were fed the suspected contaminated feeds.

Basketball camp keeping youth engaged in Trongsa

During winter vacations, most children spend their time at home. But it was different this time in Trongsa. More than a hundred youths were engaged in a Youth Basketball Camp. Children were taught the basics of the basketball, a new knowledge for most of them. The Kuwait Embassy funded the camp which ended recently.

Farmers in Chimoong, Pema Gatshel growing Dragon fruits on large scale

People of Pema Gatshel were introduced to growing dragon fruits sometime in 2019. Farmers then started out on a small scale. But with the fruit requiring less work and its market looking good, some of the farmers are planning to grow the fruit on a large scale. 

Blacktopping works on Dagapela-Sunkosh highway to complete by early next week

The maintenance and blacktopping of the road between Dagapela and Sunkosh in Dagana is yet to be complete. The works which started in June, 2020 was due for completion in June last year. An extension of five months was given considering the COVID situation and the poor weather conditions.

Gelephu Thromde to standardise signboards

As part of an initiative to add to the town’s aesthetics, Gelephu Thromde notified all business owners in the thromde to install uniform signboards. But this was not well received by the business owners down there. Today, only a few of them installed the thromde specified signboards. As per the thromde’s notification all business entities were supposed to have uniform standard signboard by 31st December.

Education ministry looking into addressing admission in Pre Primary in urban areas

The admission age for class PP students was brought down to five years last year. However, parents especially in Thimphu are claiming that schools are not taking in their children even when they are five years of age. The Prime Minister, during the meet the press session, said that the education ministry is looking into solving this issue. As per the Prime Minister, it is an issue mostly in the urban areas.

New assessment criteria to continue despite disgruntlement among students

The new assessment criteria in schools have been a subject of disgruntlement especially among students. With a student required to score passing marks in both exams and continuous assessments to get through, many are claiming the new system to be quite difficult. As per a recent report, around 15 per cent of the total students failed. This is more than 21000 students from nearly 140,000 students across the country. The figure is excluding those of class 10 and 12. But the government says this new system will continue to improve the quality of education.

Lack of technician forces Trashigang district hospital to discontinue pap smear service

The pap smear service at the Trashigang district hospital is temporarily discontinued due to the absence of cytology technician. A cyto technician works on cell samples to examine abnormalities that could lead to illness or cancer. Because of this situation, women in the region are facing difficulties since they have to either travel to Monggar or wait for the health screening camps.
