Stewardship project preserving local cuisine in Norbugang

Chinese, Indian, Italian, or Continental. Name it and the majority of the Bhutanese youth will not just know it all by name but might as well prepare them. But many would struggle if asked to name, let alone prepare, a local cuisine that their hometown is known for. To preserve and promote the tradition of preparing local cuisines among the younger generations, Norbugang village in Talo Gewog in Punakha is carrying out a stewardship project together with the department of culture.

A maize mill remains idle for more than six years- Damzhagsa in Samtse

Residents of Damzhagsa in Samtse either travel far to grind maize or resort to the conventional way despite having a maize mill in their village. The mill installed more than six years ago remains idle. It was provided through the Remote Rural Communities Development Project of the agriculture ministry.

Phobjikha receives first batch of Black-necked Crane

Phobjikha, one of the winter roosting habitats received the first batch of Black-necked cranes, the endangered bird species, this morning. A group including three adults and a juvenile flew into the valley where they will roost until spring.

LDCs call for largest emitters to act on their pledges- COP26

The Least Developed Countries (LDCs) called for the world’s largest greenhouse gas emitters to act on their commitment to reducing emissions. The 46 LDCs emit less than one per cent of the global emission. However, they bear most of the brunt of climate change. The LDCs say climate finance also needs to be scaled up to focus on adaptation to climate change during the ongoing global climate summit.

Kipse constituency nominates Samdrup Jongkhar’s first Thrompon candidate

Kipse constituency in Samdrup Jongkhar elected 34-year-old Ugyen Wangchuk as its Thrompon candidate for the upcoming Thrompon election. Two aspiring candidates contested from the constituency.  The Dhamngoi zomdu for the third local government election in Samdrup Jongkhar began from today.

Tsendrong UN Garden to celebrate 50 years of country’s Membership to the United Nations

The ground-breaking ceremony for the Tsendrong UN Garden was held today. The Garden is a gift from His Majesty The King and is dedicated to the 50th Anniversary of Bhutan’s Membership in the United Nations. Work to develop the garden will begin early next year.

People of Lauri to have better road by next year

By April next year, people of Lauri Gewog in Samdrup Jongkhar will have enough reasons to be happy. Their gewog connectivity road will be fully blacktopped by then. After coming to an abrupt halt amid the pandemic, preparation to blacktop the 36-kilometre road is back on track. However, people are asking if the contractors could expedite the work.

Man sentenced to more than 32 years in prison for rape of minor

The Samdrup Jongkhar district court sentenced a 35-year-old man to 32 years and 10 months in prison for the rape of a minor. The court passed the judgment yesterday.

Panbang Court sentences Goshing Gup to eight years in prison

The Panbang Dungkhag Court has sentenced the Goshing Gup of Zhemgang to eight years in prison for embezzlement of public funds. The Gup who is currently suspended has also been ordered to restitute more than Nu 4 M. The case had already gone through the lower courts and reached the Supreme Court in May but it was sent back to the Dungkhang Court.  The Supreme Court had stated that a proper investigation on one charge was not carried out. 

First ever biography of Guru Rinpoche written by Bhutanese authors launched

The first ever biography of Guru Rinpoche written by the Bhutanese authors was launched today. The book highlights Guru Rinpoche’s life and legacy and his contribution towards shaping social, cultural and spiritual identity of the Bhutanese people. The 700-page book is titled ‘The Life and Deeds of Padmasambhava: A Bhutanese chronicle.
