Carpenters and masons trained in building earthquake resilient structure

The country is no stranger to earthquakes. But when major ones struck in 2009 and 2011, most of the traditional structures failed the resilience test. Situated in the Himalayan range which is considered an active earthquake-prone zone, being prepared is crucial. Therefore, the department of culture is training carpenters and masons on how make traditional buildings more resilient to earthquakes.

Graduates of Bhutan and Himalayan Studies can pursue PGDE : RCSC

The graduates who studied Bhutanese and Himalayan Studies at the College of Language and Culture Studies in Tagtse, Trongsa can now pursue Post Graduate Diploma in Education in History starting this year. The news comes as a relief to some 250 students currently studying the programme in Tagtse college. The students were unhappy when the Royal University of Bhutan discontinued the programme in July this year reasoning that the graduates of the programme do not even fulfil the subject requirements for Post Graduate Diploma in Education.

Lhuentse begins ‘one child, seven skills’ policy in schools

Lhuentse's "One child, seven skills" policy to groom students with seven skills has been put in motion. It is an initiative started this year to specialise children in skills that can prove valuable later in life. The policy is a part of the education reform decided by the dzongkhag's education sector during the annual education conference held in March.

Drayangs wait for government’s ‘clear directives’ to reopen

But if you have passion and perseverance, the country also offers plenty of work, especially blue-collar jobs. 65-year-old Megnath Sanyasi from Jomotshangkha in Samdrup Jongkhar is a living proof of this. Simply by cleaning buildings in Thimphu, he is making a decent living.
