Graduates become farm entrepreneurs

Dazur village of Tang Gewog in Bumthang had its first three college graduates about five years ago. Today, none of them are civil servants or private employees. They have instead chosen to stay back home and run their own enterprises. One of them is a shopkeeper, another a dairy farmer and the third runs a poultry farm. And all of them are faring well. This is a story about the two of them who are involved in animal husbandry.

Semchen Tsethar Tshogpa’s pig shelter causing inconveniences to residents in Paro

Semchen Tsethar Tshogpa, an association that rescues animals at Doteng Gewog in Paro is in the limelight but for all the wrong reasons. People of Hoongrel, Dopshari and Doteng Gewogs have lodged a complaint against the Tshogpa to the district administration for polluting their water and causing inconveniences. People claimed that the wastewater flowing from the pigsty goes directly into their water source (Doh-chhu), which is used for irrigation and drinking purposes.

Bhutanese entering country via border areas asked to inform concerned agencies prior to arrival

Five Bhutanese girls studying at Don Bosco College in Meghalaya had to wait for almost four hours at Datgari to enter Gelegphu yesterday. They had come without following the required protocols. As per the immigration official, prior to returning home, they have to write to the Indian Council General Office upon which the council office will notify the foreign affairs ministry. The ministry will then inform the immigration office at their point of entry.

Flourishing business of Trongsa’s lone potter

As an art, it may be dying. But as a business, it is thriving. At least, this is what Trongsa's lone potter, Ugyen Dema, claims after being in the line of work for some six years now. She says although illiterate, pottery earned her a decent living.

Ginger buy-back scheme helps ginger growers

With the closure of the border gates due to the pandemic, ginger growers in Dagana, Tsirang, Trongsa and Zhemgang had a difficult time marketing their ginger last year. However, starting March this year, Gelegphu FCB auction yard started exporting gingers to India, using the government's ginger buyback scheme. And this has immensely benefitted the farmers. 

Shopkeepers in Samtse unhappy with exorbitant transportation charges

Shopkeepers in Samtse town are not happy with the increasing transportation charges incurred while shipping their goods. They say the charges doubled in the last few months. This has also triggered a hike in the price of goods and services in the town.
