COVID-19 situational update: Neighbouring Indian states

Coronavirus cases continue to rise in the neighbouring Indian states. According to the Indian health and family welfare ministry, West Bengal reported nearly 3,000 COVID-19 positive cases and 56 deaths yesterday. The total confirmed cases now stand at more than 86,000.

Heavy rain kills a farmer’s dream of a bountiful harvest of watermelon

Thinley Tempa from Doongchhilo village under Dechhenling Gewog in Pema Gatshel tried growing watermelon at this time, but heavy rain dashed his hopes of a bountiful harvest. Usually, after the first harvest in May, farmers do not cultivate watermelons.

OAG says the interim measure of importing tobacco products is legal

The Office of the Attorney General said the facilitation of import of tobacco and tobacco products in the present situation is lawful as it is an interim measure. Bhutan Duty-Free sells the tobacco and tobacco products to curb the black market and control smuggling which might transmit COVID-19.

Dry port in Samtse nearing completion

Thimphu traffic police dealing strictly with illegal roadside parking

The Thimphu traffic police have fined over 200 vehicles since last year for illegal roadside parking. The fines collected amounted to more than Nu 200,000. This active monitoring resulted in the successful implementation of forbidding roadside parking in undesignated parking areas in Thimphu.

Gelegphu vegetable vendors to export vegetable to Assam

Vegetable vendors in Gelegphu will now buy vegetables from the Food Corporation of Bhutan (FCB) and export to Assam. To start with, they agreed to export only four truckloads in a week. This is considering the small market in the neighbouring Indian towns of the state.

Retaining wall along the Dangchhu river to protect properties from flash flood

The Dangchhu Gewog Administration in Wangdue Phodrang is looking forward to constructing a retaining wall along the Dangchhu River above the Gewog centre. Recently, the swollen river unexpectedly changed its course and damaged some portion of a farm road.
