Skate park, Bhutan’s first, opens in Thimphu

It was an quite an unusual sight as youths tried out skateboarding alongside professional skaters at the newly built skate park in Bebena, Thimphu, yesterday. Some of the newbies were quite good at it, others first-timers and were cautious in their every move.

Man sentenced to nine years in prison for rape

The Chhukha District Court has sentenced a 37-year-old man from Tsirang to nine years in prison for raping and impregnating a 16-year-old girl. The man was found guilty of a rape of a child above 12 years of age.

Two men sentenced for burglary

Paro District Court sentenced two men to prison terms ranging from three to three and a half years for burglary. The judgement, which was passed on Monday, also ordered them to pay Nu 39,500 to the victim.  

Man sentenced to 25 years in prison for murder

The Punakha District Court has sentenced a 26-year-old man from Dzomi Gewog to 25 years in prison for murdering his uncle.

Two men charged in voluntary manslaughter case

The Office of Attorney General (OAG) has charged two men from Lhuentse in a voluntary manslaughter case. The miscellaneous hearing on the case was held in Lhuentse court last Thursday.

Popular Bhutanese singer and songwriter Sonam Wangchen has been announced as UNICEF National Youth Ambassador in Bhutan. The appointment – marked on World Children’s Day – makes the 16-year-old UNICEF’s first ever Bhutanese national ambassador.

November observed as world cervical cancer prevention month

Cervical cancer is the leading female cancer in Bhutan. Around 70 women are diagnosed with cervical cancer annually according to the National Referral Hospital. However, early diagnoses of cancer while screening with a Pap test has reduced the number of deaths from cervical cancer.

Peafowl sighted in Dophuchen Gewog in Samtse

The peafowl usually sighted at lower altitude in southern parts of the country have been spotted in Dophuchen Gewog of Samtse. The Gewog is located at about 2,200 metres above sea level. The people there say it has been about two years since they first spotted the bird in their village. 

India foreign secretary calls on PM

The Foreign Secretary of India, Vijay Gokhale, called on Prime Minister Lotay Tshering at the Gyalyong Tshogkhag yesterday.
