Lyonchhen on a state visit to Bangladesh

The Prime Minister, Tshering Tobgay arrived in Bangladesh’s capital, Dhaka, this morning. He is on a three-day state visit. Lyonchhen, who is accompanied by the Foreign Affairs and the Economic Affairs Ministers, are in Dhaka on the invitation of the Prime Minister of Bangladesh.

The MPs of the National Council wishing to contest next NC election can do so without resigning. The clause, which states so, is part of the National Council Amendment Bill 2014, which was endorsed in the joint-sitting, today.

NC recommends state mining corporation

The National Council recommends the government to establish a state mining corporation under Druk Holding and Investments. This, they say, will promote social and economic equity in the country by ensuring that the benefits from the state-owned resources will not be captured by a few individuals. It is one of the eight recommendations endorsed by the National Council on Wednesday.

NC reiterates that BOiC establishment is illegal

The National Council resolved the government must urgently come up with legislations for Business Opportunity and Information Centre (BOiC) so that in the future such establishments are instituted only after the authorisation of the Parliament. The house also asked the same for the Agency for Promotion of Indigenous Crafts which was set up by the previous government a few years ago.

Bhutan and European Investment Bank or EIB signed the Framework Agreement in the capital, yesterday. The Agreement is expected to pave way for collaboration between Bhutan and EIB. With this signing, Bhutan can now avail soft loans from EIB to finance hydropower projects, climate change initiatives and development of small and medium enterprises and other sectors in the country. EIB, which is the financial arm of European Union, is the largest financial institution in the world. It finances projects over 150 countries outside European Union.
