India will assure a “steadfast” and “unflinching” support to Bhutan, says the congratulatory letter, the Indian Prime Minister, Dr. Manmohan Singh, sent to the People’s Democratic Party’s (PDP) President, Tshering Tobgay. The letter was sent to Tshering Tobgay after his Party went on to secure maximum seats in yesterday’s elections. PDP secured 32 seats while Druk Phuensum Tshogpa (DPT), the Party that will form the Opposition, secured 15 seats.

While maintaining that the elections' results are unpredictable, the President of Druk Phuensum Tshogpa (DPT), Jigmi Y.Thinley, says as an Opposition, DPT will devote to serve the people and the nation to its best.

Peoples’ reaction

The People’s Democratic Party (PDP) swept the 2013 elections and the former ruling government will now form the opposition. Events leading up to the results that were covered by the media, and talked about among people pointed at deeply divided loyalties. Disparate reactions were also expected to the results.

Less voter turnout compared to 2008

The General Round of Second Parliamentary Elections saw overall voter turnout of 66.1 percent, much less compared to 2008 elections.The voter turnout during 2008 elections had been 80 percent.

PDP sweeps postal ballots

Unlike the primary, the postal voters have opted for People’s Democratic Party (PDP) in the General Elections. PDP secured the highest number of postal ballots with about 58 percent, while DPT got about 41 percent.

The People’s Democratic Party (PDP) has won the 2013 elections. They secured 32 seats while the Druk Phuensum Tshogpa (DPT) could secure only 15 seats, a major feat for a party that was formerly the world’s smallest opposition. In 2008 elections, DPT had a landslide victory after they won 45 seats out of 47.

Nation will go to the polls tomorrow

The Nation goes to the polls tomorrow to elect 47 candidates for the seat in the National Assembly. From the two political parties, whoever wins atleast 24 seats or more, will form the government.
