Less eligible voters live where their census is

Only 48 percent of the eligible voters whose census is registered in their villages actually live in village, reveals a documentary study of Bhutan’s first local government elections. This means more than half of the population lives out of their villages, which calls for a review of the current voting system that requires people to vote in the place where they have their census registered and not in the place of residence.

Woman killed in a hit-and-run

A 23-year-old woman was killed in a hit-and-run accident yesterday. The accident took place at around 7 pm near the Honda showroom in Thimphu. The deceased was hit by the vehicle while crossing the road along the expressway. She succumbed to severe head and chest injuries after reaching hospital.

Bhutan establishes diplomatic relations with UAE

Bhutan has established diplomatic relations with the United Arab Emirates. The Joint Communiqué on the establishment of diplomatic relations was signed last Thursday between Lhatu Wangchuk, the Ambassador and Permanent Representative of Bhutan to the United Nations in New York, and Ahmed Al-Jarman, the Ambassador and Permanent Representative of the United Arab Emirates to the United Nations in New York.

A case of lost heritage

The century old Dangring chorten at Hejo in Thimphu has stood the test of time. But it no longer exudes splendor and glory it used to, many years ago. The chorten has even lost its history to time. No one knows when, who and how the chorten was built.
