Road blocks in Gelephu

Monsoon season has begun and so has the road blocks in Gelephu. Following heavy rainfall last night, road blocks were reported along the Gelephu-Zhemgang highway and the Gelephu-Tsirang highway.

Corruption in public procurement, the highest

Bhutan may be losing over Nu. 4.6-5.34 billion annually to corruption in the public procurement sectors alone, states the Anti-Corruption Commission (ACC) report 2011.

A man dies in an accident

A 37-year-old man died in an accident which took place above Narphung, about 65 kilometres from Samdrup Jongkhar, yesterday. He was driving a recovery van towards Wamrong, when the vehicle veered off road and fell below the road. The deceased is from Ngatshang Gewog in Monggar. The lone passenger escaped with minor injuries.

Business in Wamrong thriving

Business in Wamrong, a transit town, between the Trashigang and Samdrup Jongkhar, is thriving. The small number of shops which houses restaurants, fast food joints and general shops caters to many commuters.

Vegetables rotten and priced too high: Wholesalers

The vegetable wholesalers from Thimphu were in for a disappointment. They had gathered at the auction yard of Food Corporation of Bhutan (FCB) in Phuentsholing, yesterday, so that they could buy and supply the vegetables to Thimphu. But, most of the vegetables were rotten and priced too high, they said.

While in some parts of the country, lack of rain has lead to drought like conditions, in other parts, large volume of rain is worrying people.

NA decides to resolve irregularities up to 2006-2007

The unresolved irregularities from 1981 to 2006 has come up to Nu.5 million according to the Public Accounts Committee Report 2011. The National Assembly today, deliberated whether the remaining balance can be written off.

Deepening the ties between Bhutan and Bangladesh

To promote trade and commerce between Bhutan and Bangladesh, a Bhutan-Bangladesh bilateral meeting on trade and transit was held in Thimphu, today. The total trade volume between the two countries rose to US$ 24.36 million  in 2010. It was Nu. 0.67 million in 1988.

(Update) Thimphu police have arrested two suspects in connection to robbery at Amankora on Tuesday morning.

Donating blood to save lives

About 45 litres of blood was collected as a part of the campaign, while observing the World Blood Donor Day in Thimphu today. On an average, JDWNR Hospital, which sees the maximum number of blood transfusion cases, requires about 25 units of blood every day.
