Safeguarding of intangible cultural heritage

The week-long training on United Nations Educational Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO) workshop on implementing the 2003 Convention for the safeguarding of the intangible cultural heritage of Bhutan ended in Paro yesterday.

Hotline and employment kiosk launched

The Ministry of Labour and Human Resources launched hotline information system and the employment kiosk today. The hotline Information System will enable employment services, labour services and training.

Raw materials impede production process

The National Post Harvest Centre at Goling, Zhemgang is fully equipped, but the production has been hampered due to acute shortage of raw materials. The Centre, an integrated food processing plant, was started in 2008. It is commonly used by the farmers from the central region of the country.

Elephant kills a man

A 68-year-old man was killed on the spot by an elephant in Peljorling B village under Sibsoo Gewog this morning at around 4:30 am. The elephant attacked the deceased while he was going to toilet, which is located about 50 metres away from the house. The elephant was usually spotted in the nearby forest feeding on the bamboo. As per the medical reports the elephant tampered on the deceased body, breaking his spinal cord.

A businessman arrested for alleged minor rape

Gelephu police arrested a 34-year-old man for allegedly raping a minor, a 14-year-old school going girl. The incident occurred in Gelephu on the night of April 26.

Men arrested for possessing drugs

Thimphu police have apprehended four men in three different drug cases this week. The Police recovered more than 3,500 tablets and 100 bottles of corex.

Gyaltsuen presented UNEP ambassadorship for Ozone

Her Majesty the Gyaltsuen was presented with the United Nations Environment Protection Ambassadorship for Ozone at the 25th anniversary of the Montreal Protocol, here in the capital yesterday.

Lyonchhoen’s visit to Haa and Samtse questioned

There were concerns raised by many people that the Prime Minister’s recent visit to Haa and Samtse was ‘timed’.  The visit, especially to Haa, where Opposition Leader comes from, many observers say, was to garner support from the constituencies there.  Answering the question raised by the media at the ‘Meet the Press’ today on the purpose of the visit, Lyonchhoen said he went there to evaluate the projects being implemented in remote areas.

YDF-NIIT Scholarship Programme launched

The Youth Development Fund and National Institute of Information Technology, NIIT, India jointly launched YDF-NIIT Scholarship Programme and also inaugurated the Playground Learning Station at the Nazhoen Pelri Youth Development Centre, Thimphu, today.

Cement shortage in Gelephu worries contractors

Construction owners in Gelephu say they are also facing shortage of cement for about a month now. Every day about 100 people, mostly construction owners, come to the depot to get cement. But they are disappointed.
