Trucks caught for illegal consignment of sand

Seven trucks carrying sand loads were caught by the forestry officials on Saturday night between 11 pm to 1 am by night patrollers along the Hongtsho-Olakha highway. They were caught for violating the Forest and Nature Conservation Rules of 2000.

Zhung Dratshang arrives in Thimphu

The Central Monastic Body led by His Holiness the Je Khenpo arrived in Thimphu for their summer residence from Puna-Dewa-Chenpoi-Phodrang yesterday. The monk body will spend the night at Semtokha Dzong as per the tradition. Today, the monk body will be escorted to the Tashichhodzong for its summer residence.

3rd edition of Mountain Echoes begins

(Brief) The 3rd edition of Mountain Echoes- a literary festival gets a burgeoning opening from Her Majesty the Queen Mother Dorji Wangmo Wangchuck, the Chief Patron of the event and the Prime Minister, last evening.

Involving students and youth in drafting policy

To finalise the draft agenda for national consultation on violence against children, a workshop was organized by the National Commission for Women and Children in the capital, yesterday. Students from schools in the capital, out of school youths, members of various youth groups and representatives from Dratshangs and Rabdeys attended the workshop.

OL is the PDP President

The People’s Democratic Party elected the Opposition Leader, Tshering Tobgay, as its President during the party’s second convention held in Thimphu today. He secured 131 votes out of 134 votes cast, using the Electronic Voting Machine. More than 150 members of PDP attended the meeting.

MHP’s major works to begin

The major execution works of the 720 megawatt Mangdechhu Hydropower Project (MHP) is all set to begin. The execution work will include construction of concrete river diversion dam, headrace tunnel and underground power house.

Ulaps not happy with farm road construction

Suspension of farm road construction in Ula Chiwog under Rubesa Gewog in Wangduephodrang has made the people living there unhappy. Ula is one of the least developed Chiwogs in Wangduephodrang. It is about four hours walk from the nearest road head.

Lam Netens come together

The annual conference of the Lama Neten Lhentshog concluded in Thimphu yesterday. Lama Netens from the 20 Dzongkhags attended the two-day conference. Speaking about the upcoming five year plan, Secretary General of the Central Monastic Body, Gembo Dorji, said they would give more emphasis on monastic education. He added that they are looking into establishing new Lobdras, strengthening Shedras and upgrading colleges.
