Albeit Bird Flu fears, poultry sector doing well

The poultry sector has achieved almost 100 percent self-sufficiency in egg and chicken production. The annual contribution to GDP from the poultry sector is estimated at Nu. 224 million. Poultry farm is the only sector that is spread almost in all the Dzongkhags. In 2010 more than 1,030 poultry farms were recorded in Bhutan.

Samtse town residents face housing shortage

Even in Samtse finding an apartment is not easy these days. The increasing population and soaring rents have further aggravated the housing crunch. Residents say more government quarters should come up like in other Dzongkhags.

Journalist Association of Bhutan revived

The Journalist Association of Bhutan (JAB) was revived today by electing a new President, General Secretary, Treasurer and steering members by the journalist themselves. The JAB is an association or an institution of the Journalists, by the Journalists and for the Journalists in the country. After it’s initiation in 2006, the association had dissolved due to lack of fund and poor co-ordination.

Oldest Dzong will get a Thongdrel

One of the oldest Dzongs in the country- Semtokha Dzong did not have a Thongdrel to display during ceremonies until now. However, this will not be the case anymore.

Man held for stealing and slaughtering yaks

Police in Thimphu have detained a 40-year-old man for stealing and slaughtering yaks. Police received the complaint last afternoon regarding the theft of four yaks from Naro in Thimphu.The suspect was arrested last night from Dotey in Paro.

More than 184 tour operators from 14 countries including 21 from Bhutan attended the third PATA Adventure Travel and Responsible Tourism Conference in Paro. The event is designed for tourism professionals who are dedicated to the growing niche segment of adventure and responsible tourism. The conference was focused on attracting high end international buyers in selling brand Bhutan in their markets.

29 boys sentenced

Thimphu District Court passed the verdict on the case where 29 boys were involved in beating up two policemen yesterday.

Thimphu TechPark fails to meet deadline

The construction of Thimphu TechPark in the Capital failed to meet its deadline. The construction was scheduled to complete by September 15 last year.

More online, less staff to verify

With the increase in the number of online Personal Income Tax (PIT) payers, the Revenue and Customs office in Thimphu is yet to open over 1,100 online Personal Income Tax files. This is because the office has become difficult to verify the files due to shortage of enough staff.
