His Majesty grants audience to the Officer in Chief, Eastern Command

His Majesty the King granted an audience to the Officer in Chief, Eastern Command, Lieutenant General Bikram Singh at the Tashichhodzong today. He arrived in the Kingdom yesterday on a four day visit.

Pentavalent vaccine to be introduced next year

The health ministry will be re-introducing the Pentavalent vaccine in June next year. The vaccine was launched in September last year. But a month later it was suspended after eight babies died following the launch of the nation-wide vaccination.

Major change in curriculum for technical institutes

The curriculum of the technical institutes will see a major shift. It will now become competency based. As a pilot project, the department of human resources launched the new curriculum for plumbing, carpentry, auto mechanic and masonry from this month.

2 students convicted for rape, sentenced to prison

A student of Monggar Higher Secondary School has been sentenced to five years in prison for raping a minor. His accomplice, also a student of the same school, received three years in prison. Both the boys are 19 years old.

Man arrested for substance abuse

Police in Bumthang have arrested a 33-year-old man for possessing marijuana at his residence on July 30. Police said they were constantly keeping a watch on the man as he was previously convicted of robbery in Thimphu and Paro.

Man mauled to death by a tiger

A 32-year-old man from Dorji Goenpa in Trongsa was mauled to death by a tiger on Sunday. Forest range officials confirmed that the man was mauled by a tiger after examining the body. It was the Royal Bengal Tiger, the only tiger sub-species found in Bhutan.

Thimphu's overcrowded crematorium

The cremation ground in Hejo is the only place for people in and around Thimphu to bring dead bodies for cremation. With increasing number of people bringing dead bodies to cremate, the ground remains packed most of the time.

A half-complete Centenary Park

Parks are meant for recreation and enjoyment. It is an area where children can play around during free time. However, the Centenary Park in Monggar is half complete and has not fulfilled its purpose. Our correspondent in Monggar says the park has instead become a breeding centre for mosquitoes.

All tested positive of H1N1, all recovered

(H1N1 UPDATE) The 10 students of Autsho and Tangmachu Middle Secondary Schools in Lhuentse whose throat swabs were sent to the National Public Health Laboratory last week have been tested positive of H1N1.

Man found dead, suspected drug overdose

A 29-year-old man was found dead in a passenger bus coming from Phuentsholing to Thimphu today. The deceased is suspected to have died from drug overdose. He had got in the bus from Gedu this morning.
