Nangkor’s villagers reject mining proposalPeople of Nangkor Village under Shumar Gewog in Pema Gatshel have rejected a proposal for gypsum extraction in their village. One of the villagers, Tharchen had proposed to start a private mining in his land.

However, of the 60 people gathered for a consultation meeting, only six voted in favour.

Tharchen needs to obtain a no-objection certificate from the villagers to go ahead with his plan.

Villagers said the mining will have more negative impact than positive.

The Dzongkhag’s Environment Officer, Chimmi Wangchuk said the investor will have to conduct a detailed feasibility study to establish that it will not affect the village and people.
