Prime Minister Dr Lotay Tshering congratulated India’s Prime Minister Narendra Modi in a telephone call for his second successive election victory yesterday.
Prime Minister’s Office (PMO) on its official Facebook page stated that Indian PM Narendra Modi acknowledged the call he received from His Majesty The King and the Prime Minister.
Lyonchhen said it only goes to show the paramount importance placed on India.
The PMO’s official Facebook page quoted Lyonchhen saying, “we were following elections in India very closely. we are happy about yet another big victory for Modiji. It is not just good for India but for Bhutan, the region and the world.”
Lyonchhen asked Prime Minister Narendra Modi to kindly consider Bhutan as the first country to visit just as he did during the first tenure, according to the PMO. Lyonchhen is looking forward to working closely with Prime Minister Modi. Dr Lotay Tshering mentioned that Prime Minister Narendra Modi was not just supportive of the 12th Five Year Plan but also assured of his determination to work for an even stronger India-Bhutan relation.
It was a sweeping landslide victory for Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) and its allies yesterday leading with nearly 350 seats of the 542 total seats while the main opposition party The Indian National Congress and its allies leading in less than 100 seats. As per media reports, more than 600 million people voted in the six-week long process, making it the largest election ever held in the world.
