After much discussion, the local leaders of Sarpang decided that a dzong would be built in Shompangkha Gewog. Unlike other dzongkhags, Sarpang does not have a dzong of its own.
While the people and the local leaders felt there is a need for one, they hadn’t been able to come to a consensus on the location of the dzong.
Four sites – Dekiling, Samtenling and Shompangkha – were put forth for the discussion.
While some preferred Samtenling, others thought the present site, which is in Shompamgkha, was better.
The Chairman of Dzongkhag Tshogdey had to intervene and ask individual gups of their preference. Thus, the location at Shompangkha was decided.
However, the Dzongkhag Engineer says the entire town structure plan will now have to be changed. The current location of the dzong was identified for the construction of VTI and MP theatre.
