Until a few years ago a lot of people from Tawang in the Indian state of Arunachal Pradesh came for the Chenga Kora and the Namgang Kora in Trashiyangtse. But this number according to our reporter, Yeshi Nidup in Trashiyangtse is decreasing.

The people from Tawang in Arunachal Pradesh come because of its historical significance. It is believed that on the 15th day of the first Bhutanese month, a young girl from Tawang, believed to be a Dakini, agreed to be buried alive as the Nangten of the Chorten. And to this day, people from Tawang come to Chorten Kora to offer their prayers and respects.

Until a few years ago, more than 300 Dakpas came to the Chorten Kora during the festival. Last year only five turned up. However, the number looks good this time as many people have already started arriving for the Namgang Kora, which is tomorrow.

Lam Tashi, 69, from Seru village in Tawang blamed development for lesser people turning up for the Namgang Kora. “Long distance walk could be the other reason,” he added.

The Trashiyangtse Dzongda, Sangay Duba, said a strong bond of relationship has also developed between the people of Trashiyangtse and Tawang over the years.

The majestic Chorten Kora was built in 1740 by Lam Ngawang Loday in memory of his late uncle and also to subdue a demon that lived where the Chorten stands today.
