Late Sangay Wangchuk (PhD), who served more than 40 years with the Department of Forests and Park Services (DoFS), has been conferred the Jigme Singye Wangchuck Outstanding Environmental Stewardship Award by the Bhutan Ecological Society (BES).

The award was given as part of the Fifth Annual Research Symposium and Environmental Fair yesterday.

Late Sangay Wangchuk (PhD) was conferred the award for playing an instrumental role in establishing the current system of protected areas in Bhutan. He also led and oversaw the design and designation of networks of biological corridors in Bhutan.

The award was received by his son Rixzin Wangchuk.

Late Sangay Wangchuk

“My father was dedicated to his work, whatever he was doing he would give his best. He lives on in our memories and to receive this very prestigious award is a big source of pride and joy for our family.”

At the event, the Royal Patron of BES Her Royal Highness Ashi Chimi Yangzom Wangchuck launched the third issue of the Journal of Bhutan Ecological Society.

An environmental fair exhibition was also opened to the public.

During the two-day programme, researchers from across the country presented their studies related to the environment and its conservation.
