With 90,802 new cases reported in the last 24 hours, India surpassed Brazil and is now the second worst-hit country in the world by the pandemic. The Health and Family Welfare Ministry’s data showed that India now has a total of 4.2 million cases, which is nearly 70,000 ahead of Brazil.
The United States with more than 6 million cases still remains the worst-affected country. India for the second consecutive day registered more than 90,000 new infections in the last 24 hours.
According to the World Health Organisation’s data, India has been reporting the highest number of daily COVID-19 cases in the world for nearly a month. However, more than 3.2 million COVID patients have recovered so far. Over 69,000 recoveries have been reported since yesterday. This morning, the Health and Family Welfare Ministry reported 1,016 deaths taking the total number of fatalities to 71,642.
Similarly, the cases are soaring in neighbouring states. West Bengal saw 3,087 new cases and 52 deaths in the last 24 hours. The state currently has 23,218 active cases. However, the state is seeing an increasing number of people recovering from COVID-19. Almost 154,008 are declared recovered.
And in Assam State, 1,537 new cases were recorded in the last 24 hours taking the total number to 125,459. The state saw almost 97,000 people recovering from the virus although 360 fatalities were recorded so far.
Despite the surging cases and deaths, the Indian government today reopened metro trains in selected cities, more than 5 months after it was shut down to prevent the spread of coronavirus. All protective measures like face masks, physical distancing and temperature checks were made mandatory.
Meanwhile, Coronavirus cases have infected around 27 million people across the world. The Coronavirus has so far killed 883,000 people. However, almost 18.1 million have recovered from the infection.
