An Improvised Explosive Device (IED) which was planted under Hordung Zampa- the suspension bridge, over Sunkosh River in Nichula gewog under Lhamoizingkha Dungkhag exploded on Tuesday.
The explosion, however, did not cause any damage to the bridge that connects the gewog with the rest of the Dungkhag.
The police investigation team found that, from a distance of about 15 metres, the IED was connected to a wire, which was then joined to a 12 volt battery to trigger the explosion. The IED was placed underneath the bridge.
Police recovered a brochure belonging to the Bhutan United Socialists Democratic Party (BUSDP). BUSDP is a militant organisation based in Jhapa, Nepal. A press release from the police stated that the militant group claims the responsibility for the bomb blast.
Meanwhile police are carrying out the investigation and have requested the Indian counterpart for assistance.
