For the first time in the history of Bhutan’s young democracy, a party has secured a second term as the ruling government. The People’s Democratic Party sweeps 30 constituencies from the western, central, and southern parts of the country to become the fourth democratically elected government of Bhutan. The Bhutan Tendrel Party will be the Opposition Party with 17 seats in the National Assembly.
The Bhutan Tendrel Party won almost all the constituencies in the east. The difference in the number of votes in each constituency ranged from 200 to more than 2,000.
The most substantial vote difference of over 2,000 was in all three constituencies in Pema Gatshel.
As for the central part of the country, the voters in Nubi_Tangsibji constituency in Trongsa elected BTP’s candidate but the vote difference was just about 250 votes between the PDP and BTP candidates.
The majority of the voters in the western, central, and southern parts of the country chose the People’s Democratic Party.
But there was not much of a difference in the number of votes in most of the constituencies.
The highest vote difference between the two parties was in both the constituencies in Chhukha, where the two PDP candidates won by a margin of over 4,000 votes.
The least difference was in South Thimphu Constituency with PDP’s Tshewang Rinzin winning by just 35 votes.
The Jomotshangkha_Martshala Constituency in Samdrup Jongkhar chose PDP’s candidate but the vote difference was just 400.
Both the party president won in their constituencies by a huge margin.
BTP’s President, Pema Chewang, won the Kanglung_Samkhar_Udzorong Constituency with a difference of more than 2,600 votes.
Likewise, the voters in Sangbaykha Constituency elected the PDP’s President, Tshering Tobgay, securing more than 2,000 votes compared to his BTP’s counterpart.
Although the People’s Democratic Party won 30 seats, three former ministers of the second government were not able to secure seats from their constituencies.
