The warden of Pakshikha Central School in Chhukha who hit a student had to pay a compensation of Nu 55,000 to the student’s parents. The compensation was paid on Friday following talks between the warden and the boy’s parents to resolve the matter internally.
The incident occurred on the night before the Teachers’ Day. To avoid theft and other nuisances, students are barred from moving out of their rooms after dinner. That night, however, the warden caught two students violating the rule.
The warden then hit them with a plank, leaving one of them with an injured cheek. The plank had a nail in it. The school immediately took him to Gedu hospital where he received few stitches.
A Facebook post on the issue went viral prompting Education Ministry to call for a thorough police investigation into the case.
In a lengthy Facebook post, the Education Minister wrote that the ministry is “deeply disturbed by the incidence”.
Lyonpo Norbu Wangchuk described it as “a gross violation of school regulations and serious betrayal of ethical conduct required of a school authority such as the warden.”
The post also states that while it is a rare incidence, “such conduct in the school premise by a school authority” will not be tolerated.
The school has submitted a statement to the Dzongkhag. The Dzongkhag Human Resource Committee will discuss on it for necessary action.
