Why are the students in the boarding schools often falling sick? The Opposition Leader, Tshering Tobgay, and Ugentse-Yoeseltse MP, Lila Pradhan, questioned the government during the National Assembly’s Question Hour, yesterday.

Is it due to low nutritional diet, as reported by media or due to some other factors? Asked MP Lila Pradhan.

Tshering Tobgay said it has been about six months since the education conference where the stakeholders promised that they won’t let such incident repeat took place. “We still hear that students are falling sick in boarding schools,” he said. “What are the measures the government has put in place?”

The Education Minister, Thakur Singh Powdyel, said the education ministry along with agriculture ministry is working to curb the low nutritional diet in boarding schools. Lyonpo said the health ministry has already started supplying vitamin supplements and iron tablets to the students. “We are giving our best,” said Lyonpo Thakur Singh Powdyel.

Lyonpo also added that the agriculture program in schools is being strengthened. As an immediate measure, the government has increased the school feeding stipend to Nu.1,000 from Nu.700 per month.
