Around eight kilograms of gold was seized by Customs officials at the Paro International Airport on Saturday. The gold was being brought to the country illegally by four Indian Nationals by hiding them in their undergarments.
They were travelling in two groups, two in Drukair and the rest in Bhutan Airlines from Bangkok. The customs officials said they became suspicious at their odd way of walking and decided to check their bodies.
Another Indian who had come to receive them at the airport was also detained. Two more Indians were also detained from a hotel in Thimphu for questioning.
The case is currently under investigation. As per the rules, a person can bring in a maximum of 50 grams of gold freely. Beyond this, permission is needed from the Royal Monetary Authority and duty taxes has to be paid.
