Schools in the country have been taking various initiatives to protect the environment. Choden Lower Secondary School in Thimphu has come up with a new initiative. Guess what would that?
The school has recently replaced the use of ball-point pens with ink pens. Every student, teacher and non-teaching staff is using a ink pen. The move was initiated by a teacher of the school, Rinchen Phuntsho.
He said that it was in November last year, that he got the idea while attending a needs assessment workshop at the Royal Botanical Park in Lamperi. “The park warden there shared how he avoided using ball point pens as his contribution towards the preservation of nature.”
Rinchen Phuntsho said even if only a few hundred people refrained from using plastic, they could make a huge difference. Soon as Rinchen Phuntsho made a presentation to his school last month, students and the teachers alike stopped using the ball-point pen. The school has now completely switched to ink pens. “Since they are our future generations, it is important to teach them how important it is to protect our environment.”
Rinchen said he hopes that other schools would also be motivated and follow their footsteps to do their part in protecting the environment.
