Thousands of acres of forests are lost to fire every year. In the last five years, more than 55,000 acres of forest were destroyed by fire. In 2011-12, about 39 forest fire cases where reported, while in 2012-13 about 34 cases were reported.
Forest Fire Management Section under the Department of Forests and Park Services (DoFPS) says while it has been difficult to ascertain the causes of forest fire, the common causes include debris burning, electric short circuit, rolling stones, and children playing with fire.
