Education for all is one of the top priorities of the government. Although students with special needs were not discriminated, they had limited opportunities until a few years ago.
Currently, experts from the US, local teachers, school principals and Dzongkhag Education Officers are in Thimphu to discuss ways to adopt inclusive models to meet the changing needs of each child.
The three day session, organised by Bhutan Foundation, will equip the teachers with skills on classroom occupational therapy and effective leadership lessons among others.
Across Bhutan, there are 366 students with special needs. And to cater to the needs of these students, there are 255 teachers trained in special needs education.
Of the 366 students, 62 percent are students with learning difficulties and the rest 138 have problems with other forms of ability.
From 20 students with special needs in Khaling Lower Secondary School in 2012, the school today has as many as 43 students with special needs.
The teachers are taught to act as an agent of change to transform the lives of all children with any forms of ability.
