The two-storey Phongmey Gewog office was heavily damaged by a fire early this morning at around 4:00 am.
One of the residents staying nearby the gewog office first saw the fire while going to the toilet and reported the incident to the gewog Mangmi, who then asked help from the neighbours and reported it to the police.
Trashigang police firefighter and locals contained the fire at around 7:00 am. They were also able to control the fire from spreading to the community centre and the public meeting hall which was quite close to the gewog office.
However, most of the gewog properties and documents were lost to the fire.
The cause of the fire is not yet known.
