European countries extend restrictions to respond to the pandemic

Many European countries are still implementing various measures to prevent the increasing spread of the Coronavirus. The measures include lockdowns, curfews and travel restrictions among others.

While France was under curfew since December last year, the curfew was further tightened last Saturday. With the closure of all businesses at 6 pm, everyone should be at home by then. According to international media, bars, restaurants, theatres, cinemas and ski resorts remain shut.

With similar curfews in Italy, travel between Italy’s 20 regions is restricted. Only essential shops are allowed to open in a few places due to the substantial spread of the virus.

Similarly in Germany, non-essential shops are closed with the introduction of lockdown recently.

Spain is under nationwide curfew until early May this year.

The Netherlands and Denmark also extended their lockdown until February 9 and 7 respectively.

And in Sweden, a new emergency law came into effect on 10th January. As per international media, Sweden has avoided imposing rules in this crisis but the new law now gives the government power to impose coronavirus-related measures.

Meanwhile, nurseries and primary schools were allowed to reopen in Greece.  This is following a strict lockdown since November that helped contain the surge in new cases.

Globally, there are over 95.5 M COVID-19 positive cases with the highest in the United States. The US reported nearly 140,000 new cases on Monday. This brings the total number of confirmed cases in the US at over 24 M.
