water supply in Gelegphu to be resolvedThe erratic water supply in Gelegphu will be resolved soon. The thromde said they have installed bore wells in three different places to supply water without disruption. But permanent water supply network is yet to be in place which will depend on the availability of the resources.

Gelegphu Thromde has resorted to harvesting ground water. Three bore wells have been constructed at Dzomlingthang, AWP area and the village at Tankey in Gelegphu. But at the moment, only bore well in operation is the one at Dzomlingthang.

The Deputy Executive Engineer of Gelegphu Thromde, Karma Wangdi, said earlier the main water source was Mao River and pumping the water to the reservoir at Dzomglingthang was a problem. “We have been exploring the possibility of harvesting ground water for about four months and now we are able to store enough water in this reservoir. He said one of the water problems earlier was due to improper planning and too many pipes.

The existing water supply network was built more than four decades ago. There are temporary lines but is filled with leakages leading to water shortage. The thromde is maintaining and building proper network system for continuous water supply. The works are still under progress but the people are already benefitting.

Once the proper network is in place, a meter will be installed. Thromde also said it supplies six million liters of water every day which, they said, is actually more than enough for the existing urban population.
