The Monggar District Court sentenced Tashi Dawa from Kengkhar Gewog to 20 years in prison for statutory rape. The 23-year-old man was found guilty of raping a seven-year-old girl. The court passed the judgment today.
The Penal Code of Bhutan grades the crime as a first-degree felony with a prison term of a minimum of 15 years to life. According to the judgment, the sentencing was passed based on the nature of the crime he committed and also that the man does not have any past criminal records. The convict confessed to the crime in the court.
The police arrested the convict in February this year after the mother of the girl reported the case to the Gup.
