The Thimphu district court has sentenced a 34-year-old man to 15 years and nine months in prison for forgery. The verdict was passed last week.

The conman who is from Pemagatshel used fake documents and forged the seal of the Gyalpoi Zimpon’s office to deceive people.

The fake documents show that he had been granted a plot of land measuring 50 decimal at Ramtokto in Thimphu as kidu. He offered to sell 25 decimal to a contractor for Nu.750, 000.

The contractor gave a hilux to the convict in lieu of Nu.340, 000 and agreed to pay the remaining amount at a later date.

A few months later, the convict borrowed the contractor’s bolero jeep on the pretext that he had to go to Paro on an emergency. He never returned.

The convict was arrested in March this year after the contractor met him accidentally in Phuentsholing and informed the police.

Police had received several complaints against the conman.
