Attempts to clean the Mebartsho often prove unsuccessful, largely owing to the lake’s location, which renders cleaning not only difficult but also dangerous. However, the Desuups in Bumthang teamed up with the Dzongkhag and the Police and carried out a cleaning campaign at the lake area, last Friday.
Mebartsho is sacred. Apart from being a popular pilgrimage site, the lake is also a major tourist attraction in Bumthang.
While the local communities and the Dzongkhag take care of the lake, the conditions around the lake have become risky.
Lung Dhars such as these block the view of the lake, posing risk to the visitors. And driftwood can be seen floating on the lake.
Desuup volunteers intend to carry out similar clean-up campaigns to keep the lake clean and also safe for the visitors.
