The Bhutan Council for School Examinations and Assessment declared the class X result today. Only about 70 per cent of students who appeared in the exam for the academic year 2021 passed the exam. According to BCSEA, it is the lowest overall pass percentage in a decade.
Sonam Pema from Motithang Higher Secondary School is a national topper for class X with a score of 94.80 per cent. Kinley Deki Yangzom of Ugyen Academy came second with 93.20 per cent. Anisha Gurung from Peljorling Higher Secondary School in Samtse scored 92.80 per cent and took the third position.
“I was extremely overjoyed and surprised when the result came out. I am sure the COVID-19 situation was stressful for all exam takers and it was the same for me as well. Preparing and studying for the exams without even a confirmation when it was going to take place often messed with my study schedule,” said Sonam Pema, the national topper.
In Language and Culture Studies Certificate class X examination, a total of 11 students appeared in the exam. Nim Dem with 78.80 per cent bagged the first position. Selden and Tshering Lhamo took second and third positions respectively.
“I am very happy with the result as I belong to poor family background. I did not expect to be in the first place. I want to thank my teacher, my parents and His Majesty,” said Nim Dem.
The overall pass percentage stands at 70 per cent, a decrease of more than 26 per cent from the previous year.
“Pass mark has increased to 40 per cent as compared to last year. Last year it was 35 per cent. The second reason could be the policy change. Unlike in the previous year, this year a candidate has to pass continuous assessment as well as theory. The third reason could be due to the Competent Based Assessment,” said Sherab Gyeltshen, BCSEA’s Examination and Assessment Officer.
More than 12,500 class X students appeared the BCSE in March this year.
