Chhudzom-Gewog-ElectricityChhudzom Gewog, previously known as Dovan, is the only gewog in Sarpang without electricity. The gewog was supposed to be electrified by December last year. But the electrification work has just begun.

The Regional Manager of Bhutan Power Corporation, Karma Wangchuk, said the delay in budget release by JICA impeded the project. Japan International Corporation Agency (JICA) could not release the budget on time because of the earthquake and tsunami that hit Japan in March 2011.

“The work could not start as per the plan because we could float the tender only on September 9…With no proper roads raw materials also could not be transported on time,” said Karma Wangchuk.

The Prime Minister, Jigmi Y.Thinley, during his visit to Dovan last month, said the gewog will be electrified by mid this year. However, he said electrifying the whole gewog by that time may prove difficult.

Many people BBS spoke to said they are happy that the electricity is coming to their village even if it means they will have to wait a little longer.

About 600 households will have power supply under the project. The project is worth Nu.364 Million.
