Construction owners in Gelephu say they are also facing shortage of cement for about a month now. Every day about 100 people, mostly construction owners, come to the depot to get cement. But they are disappointed.
With the financial year closing in July they are worried that if they do not complete the work on time, the fund may go back especially for the government owned projects.
“We will not be able to complete our work on time. We will run on loss,” said Gyeltshen, a contractor.
The demand for cement has increased in recent times due to more developmental activities like mega projects coming up in Gelephu.
The requirement of cement in Gelephu at this time is about 200 metric tonnes a day. But the Gelephu central regional cement depot could supply only 90 metric tonnes.
According to the depot officials, the shortage of cement is aggravated by the additional demand from other Dzongkhags like Wangduephodrang, Punakha, Bumthang and Trongsa.
Meanwhile the depot has already received more than 21,000 metric tonnes of cement to be supplied within this month for those who have placed orders.
