Her Majesty the Gyaltsuen was presented with the United Nations Environment Protection Ambassadorship for Ozone at the 25th anniversary of the Montreal Protocol, here in the capital yesterday.
“There is no need to further emphasise Bhutan’s genuine and unwavering commitment towards environment conservation. For those of you who may not know, four years ago, I interned at the National Environment Commission. It was a wonderful experience and coincidentally during that time, I was working on the Ozone project. My commitment to this issue is sincere and truly personal,” said the Gyaltsuen.
Her Majesty also released commemorative 3-D Ozone stamp to mark the occasion.
This year marks the 25th Anniversary of Montreal Protocol, one of the most effective international treaties, designed to protect ozone layer.
Bhutan ratified the Montreal Protocol during the 82nd Session of National Assembly in 2004. Bhutan is one of the few countries under the protocol to achieve significantly in committing the phasing out of substances that deplete ozone layer.
In the current phase, Bhutan has committed to phase out Hydrochloroflurocarbons or HCFCs in 2025, ten years ahead of the Montreal Protocol schedule.
