Celebrating Sherig Century: Celebrating 100 years of nation building

Celebrating Sherig Century: 100 years of nation building has been launched coinciding with the birth anniversary of the 3rd King. The ceremony was held at the Nazhoen Pelri Hall in Thimphu on Wednesday.

The launch of the yearlong celebration was graced by Her Royal Highness the Princess, Kesang Wangmo Wangchuck. The celebration is being described asan achievement that Bhutan made in the past century. It essentially reflects on 100 years of nation building guided by the vision of successive monarchs and leaders.

Launching the celebrations, Her Royal Highness the Princess, Kesang Wangmo Wangchuck said the “Sherig century reflects the achievements made in the past century, to assess the present, and prepare for the future. “With rapid socio-economic changes, there are many challenges. The education system must evolve to respond to the challenges”, said her Royal Highness the Princess.

The Education Minister, Thakur Singh Powdyel said “in observing the Sherig Century of modern education, we are in fact celebrating the march of our country from its humble beginnings to a dynamic forward looking, confident modern nation state charting its own destiny. Several other speakers including the Deputy Minister, Dasho Nado Rinchhen also spoke on the achievements made by Bhutan in education sector.

Coinciding with the launch, the education ministry also released Sherig stamps and souvenirs. Her Royal Highness also awarded Sherig badges, with the inscription- Thank You Teachers, for the light and the learning to the senior teachers. As part of the programme several cultural programmes were staged by the students from various schools.

In a message, to celebrate the Sherig Century, the Education Minister said “it is a moment too to look to the future and do what we must to build a Bhutan of our dreams. May 2 is also observed as the “Teacher’s Day” every year.
