Blacktopping of Samdrup Jongkhar Toed and Bar roads begins

Soon, the residents of Samdrup Jongkhar will be able to enjoy smooth rides between Samdrup Jongkhar Toed and Bar constituencies and the Samdrup Jongkhar town. The roads that remained in bad shape riddled with potholes for the last two years are finally being blacktopped.

Blacktopping work on over a five-kilometre road in Samdrup Jongkhar Toed and Bar started last week.

According to the contractor who is carrying out the work, the blacktopping work is expected to be completed within this month if the weather condition remains favourable.

The contractor said the road was damaged while constructing a sewerage trunk line in the area.

But over a 1.5-kilometre stretch in Samdrup Jongkhar Toed will not be blacktopped. According to the Samdrup Jongkhar Thromde administration, the contractor is not liable to repair this stretch as the road was in bad condition before the construction of the sewerage trunk line.

Thromde officials said they do not have the budget for now and are looking for a budget to blacktop the stretch.

The road becomes muddy during rainy days and dusty on sunny days.

“The road is not good and we facing problems. Other drivers also said the road is not good. I stay near the bus terminal and we face dust problems,” said Tshering Dorji, a resident.

“It is causing problems for students, commuters and business people. It is convenient to have a good road but here the road is dusty with potholes,” Kuenga Namgay, another resident.

“We would be grateful if the road could be blacktopped while maintaining the standard quality so that the government does not have to resurface it time and again,” said Wangpo, who is also a resident.

Today, the works to connect the sewerage line to the households are ongoing and the same contractor is also working on water distribution in the area.
