InternationalHappinessDayThe people in the capital observed the International Day of Happiness with the unfurling of the giant Guru Thongdrel at the courtyard of Tashichhodzong, this morning.

The Norzin Lam remained closed to traffic. Instead, various cultural programmes were showcased along the street. Food stalls were opened at Changlingmithang parking area and along the Norzin lam. Free medical check-ups were also made available in different areas.

Motion pictures association of Bhutan coordinated entertainment shows at Clock tower square. The celebration concluded with a football match at Changlimithang stadium.

In Paro, a cultural show was organised by the Dzongkhag Administration to mark the celebration. Students and professional dancers performed for the public. An open clinic was also set up nearby, where people were given free health checkups.

Our reporter, Surjaman Thapa, said Chhotshe Dzongkhag Volunteers group was officially launched in Trongsa to observe the International Day of Happiness. The group had collected a million Ngultrum worth of goods. The goods were distributed to needy people in Trongsa.

The day was observed in a different way in Wangdue Phodrang. The Dzongkhag granted a special kidu to Tshering Dema, 45, from Nyisho Gewog. The Dzongkhag officials provided CGI sheets to Tshering Dema to replace her old roof which is at the verge of collapsing.

Tashitse Higher Secondary School in Wamrong under Trashigang celebrated the day by showcasing cultural programmes with a theme, ‘Gross National Happiness is more important than Gross National Product’.

In Tsirang, the day coincided with the Dzongkhag’s annual Tshechu. Dzongdag Ngawang Pem said the district is blessed to be able to celebrate two auspicious events on the same day.
