Bajo Town undergoing a makeover

Bajo Town in Wangdue Phodrang has undergone a makeover in recent days. The makeover includes filling up of potholes appeared on the surface of the roads and building a pedestrian walkway.

In the 12th Five-Year-Plan, the dzongkhag authority has plans to construct recreational parks and expand municipal boundary. The present focus is on the extended town, which will be developed in between the existing Bajo throm till the area below Bajo Lhakhang.

“We are immediately starting with painting rooftops of the buildings in green. In the next Five-Year-Plan, we have proposed to develop a valley of flowers. For the extended municipal areas, we want to discuss with the Ministry of Works and Human Settlement to allow people to construct buildings ranging from two-storey to five-storey,” told Wangdue Dzongdag, Sonam Jamtsho to BBS News.

According to local visitors, the town looks messy and clustered, but for residents and plan implementers, the town has all the needed facilities in place. Vendors also got a new vegetable shed recently.

“It is much comfortable now to do business in new vegetable shed. We don’t have to endure heat and dust. But we need more space here. Otherwise during peak seasons, vendors rush for space to accommodate,” said one of the vendors, Phub Gyem.

One of the residents, Kinga Dorji said, “We are lucky that the throm has most of the facilities in place. Earlier, taxi parking would be often packed and to address that, a new parking space has been allotted.”

The dzongkhag has allocated Nu 14m for town beautification activities.
