The Ministry of Health has drafted a national alcohol policy and strategic framework to reduce the harmful use of alcohol in the country. It was drafted in consultation with relevant stakeholders. The draft framework has been submitted to the Gross National Happiness Commission in July last year for policy screening.

Over 150 people died from alcohol related diseases in the last three years in Thimphu hospital alone. Records maintained by the National Referral Hospital show a fall in the number of deaths from alcohol related diseases but there are thought to be cases that go unreported and some that fall outside the purview of the hospital. We had MP Zangley Dukpa, Senior Programme Officer from Department of Public Health, Tandin Chogyel, Major Karma Sonam from Crime Prevention Division and Trade Officer, Dhurba Giri are on the panel.
