The Monggar District Court sentenced a 36-year-old man from Balam Gewog in Monggar to five years in prison for the illicit trafficking of hashish. The judgment was passed yesterday.
The man was convicted under section 134 of the Narcotic Drugs Psychotropic Substances and Substance Abuse Amendment Act of Bhutan 2018. According to this Act, A defendant shall be guilty of an offence of illicit trafficking of cannabis and its derivatives, regardless of the degree of purity, if he or she possesses, imports, exports, stores, sells, purchases, transports, distributes, or supplies cannabis or its derivatives if it is more than the quantity determined in Schedule VII of this Act.
The police arrested the man who was on his way to Trongsa on the 18th of February from Kilikhar in Monggar. He was in possession of 57 sticks of hashish weighing over 300 grams in total. He also tested positive for marijuana.
