A windstorm in Monggar destroyed 255 acres of maize fields belonging to 484 households on the evening of July 18.

The affected Gewogs are Monggar, Chagsakhar, Drepoong,Tsakaling,Thang Rong, Ngatshang and Tsamang. Of the seven Gewogs, the hardest hit was Chagsakhar with more than one hundred acres of maize belonging to 174 households damaged by the windstorm. In Ngatshang Gewog, some 80 acres of maize was damaged while Drepong recorded 27 acres. Forty one households of Tsakaling lost 15 acres of maize. Monggar and Thang Rong Gewogs recorded 14 acres each. Tsamang was the least affected with over an acre damage.

Chagsakhar Gup Pema Dorji, who is also part of the assessment team, said the Gewog administrations are helpless during such times. “There is nothing the Gewog can do even though farmers plea for crop compensation.”

The assessment reports from the Gewogs were submitted to Monggar Dzongkhag yesterday. Maize is the staple food for the farmers in Monggar.

In Pema Gatshel, heavy rainfall and windstorm damaged maize in Tshatshi and Tokarey Chiwogs under Nanong Gewog. The Chiwog Tshogpa said the Gewog is still compiling information from the affected households.

Meanwhile officials in Trashigang are also assessing the damages caused to the maize fields in Lumang Gewog. Heavy windstorm in the evening of July 18 damaged maize fields belonging to more than five households there.
