Following a recent dengue fever outbreak in Samtse, people residing in the main town area have started cleaning the surroundings since yesterday.
Residents said the cleaning exercise will go on until next three days. Shopkeepers and other residents living within the vicinity of Samtse Dzongkhag Thromde volunteered to clean their places thoroughly after 21 people were detected with dengue fever as of Friday. They are cleaning all the drainage ways, outdoor water containers and other mosquito prone spots.
“We took part in the cleaning because we are scared our children might get dengue fever and also mosquitoes spread other diseases,” said one of the residents, Bahru Tamang.
Meanwhile officials from the Samtse hospital say control measures against the outbreak have already been taken as per the health ministry’s guidelines. They are carrying out awareness programme, vector surveillance, thermal fogging and destruction of mosquito breeding sites. People, on their own, are also advised to stay protected from mosquitoes.
The first positive case of dengue fever was detected on 23 June.
