Chhumig mini-hydropower to light Bumthang uninterruptedOnce the rehabilitation of Chhumig’s 1.7 MW mini-hydropower completes, locals in Bumthang will get uninterrupted power supply, even when there is a problem with the national grid.

The rehabilitation will complete in early 2018.

“During heavy snowfall in winter, it is difficult to provide uninterrupted power supply. So during that time, we can provide electricity to half of Bumthang Dzongkhag from the mini-hydel in Chhumig,” said Bhutan Power Corporation’s Chief Manager in Bumthang, Gyeltshen.

An Austrian company is carrying out the work which began in March, this year.

The mini-hydel was established in 1989.

Other small scale hydropower plants in Bumthang include the one in Tamzhing which will also be in operation soon. Another one in Ura is already in operation.

Once all these small-scale hydropower start functioning, the dzongkhag will have enough power for other purposes, besides lighting homes.

The Chief Manager said they should be able to supply power to industries and factories.
