Government to focus on professional development of teachersThis year, the government will focus on professional development of teachers in the country. This was the message the Prime Minister, Tshering Tobgay conveyed as the Nation celebrated Teachers’ Day, on Monday.

Around 1,600 teachers from Thimphu gathered at the Royal Institute of Management to celebrate the day.

Addressing the gathering, Lyonchhen thanked the teachers for their service and ensured  government’s support for their professional development.

“Today, as we walked on the red carpet and entered the hall, I couldn’t help but notice the potential in our teachers. I couldn’t help but notice how young, many of our teachers are.  That, youth combined with that potential and energy, gives us an opportunity of our lifetime.”

Education Minister, Norbu Wangchuk said it is the first time that teachers’ day is celebrated at this scale. “It would have been ideal if all the teachers working in 20 dzongkhags in 539 schools, could gather at one place.”

As part of the celebration, a lucky draw was also held. A hundred and fifty teachers from across the country won laptops, mobile phones, and air tickets among others. The prizes were sponsored by parents and various private companies to express their gratitude to the teachers of Bhutan.

Bhutan observed the first National Teachers’ Day in 2003, coinciding with the Birth Anniversary of the Third Druk Gyalpo.
